Blog of the Week – The Joy of Tech

July 19th, 2006

Every week I’ll blog about another blog that I read and would reccomend to you for a number of reasons that I’ll state. Hope you enjoy the links.

The Joy of Tech

Okay, so again not exactly a blog but it might as well be. An extremely funny take on current technology news sometimes specifically looking at the war between Apple and Microsoft. I can’t write much about it but it’s one of my favourite web comics. Add it to your list.

Passing By…

July 17th, 2006

Just popping in to give a quick update and tell you you’ll have to wait a bit longer for another blog post (but as always, you’ll get your fill of Blog of The Week on Wednesday). I’ve only just recovered from a job on a building site I partook in on Saturday and the rest of the week I’ll be helping my neighbour shift his 5″ thick concrete patio into a skip. So, just incase you don’t hear from me, don’t worry :P .

4D Globe

July 14th, 2006

Via Blogoscoped, one of my Blog of the Week award recipients, I was pointed to a project by university students in the Netherlands: Globe4D. The project is a fully interactive ‘globe’ that uses time as an extra dimension so you can see continents form and break apart. It looks really interesting, cheap to produce and I’ve no doubt we’ll start to see something like this in our local museums and schools in the next 10 years.

Visit the official site, watch a video about it hosted on YouTube.

Microsoft + Yahoo = IM Interopability

July 13th, 2006

We’ve known about it for around nine months now but Microsoft has said that a limited beta test of a service that will allow Windows Live Messenger users to connect with users of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (that’s the American version of the software, get the British version here). This has been reported by numerable news sites over the internet.

Personally, I think this is a really positive move between the two major companies and will benefit a lot of users. I use both Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger but I’ve noticed a distinct difference between the way I use the two programs. My contacts on Windows Live Messenger are, I’d say, 95% British/European while 95% of my contacts on Yahoo! Messenger are American. Maybe this is just me, I don’t know, but this move by Microsoft and Yahoo will bridge the gap a little more. I welcome this move and I’ll be testing it over the next couple days as well.
