New Theme! Oh Yeah!

May 31st, 2006

Okay, so I’ve been designing, making and WordPress-ing my new theme. I haven’t got a name for it but I doubt it really needs one. Sunny Boy’s Blog Theme will do nicely. Instead of choosing a template already available, I thought damn it, I’ll make my own. My design is a cross between my ‘Foggy Glass‘ template, the Google Analytics homepage and Cow’s Blog. It’s taken me just over two days to get to the stage that you see now – it’s still pretty buggy on the CSS side though – and I’m pleased with it. It’s unique and there’s no other site on the internet like it.

The Design

I first made a mockup of what I wanted the site to look like. Click the thumbnail below to see my full scale mockup. This was the first time that I’d actually created a mockup before creating a site and I have to say it helped immensly. As you can see I made minor changes to the design but I feel ultimately all the changes I made were for the best.

WordPress

On creating the new design, I wondered what the hell I was going to do with it. Damn it. I’ll make a bloody WordPress theme out of it. And so today I’ve been templating the damn thing. During the process I encountered numerous new holes I had to jump over such as more CSS and exsessive trips back and forth to the WordPress Codex for the functions I needed. It’s surprisingly enjoyable though – just like my theme for Geneone.

Conclusion

In conclusion I am very happy with the new design. I’m not looking for your comments on it but I won’t delete them if you comment either. I’ve still a few CSS and template bugs to sort out so if you see some blue and purple links, don’t mind them – I’ll kill them sooner or later.

Pseudonyms

May 29th, 2006

Pseudonyms are used by most of us, wouldn’t you agree? On forums, instant messaging programs, chat rooms and online multiplayer games. You may have a different pseudonym for each of those. It interested me today when I was making some changes to the EoP homepage whether or not to use my pseudonym or my real name. I’m sure most of you don’t actually use your real name on any website that’s publically available and where it’s informal and unprofessional – such as a forum dedicated to Stargate, for example. I personally use a variety of pseudonyms for different websites and software purely for privacy and security reasons. What about you?

For a web designers (or developers) professional career, a pseudonym is rarely used. If you’re a member of the PEAR community, for example, a real name is usually used because it’s a professional environment. But on places such as Wikipedia, online mulitplayer games and hobby forums a pseudonym is always used. Why, I wondered? Well, who wants to give their name away to strangers!? But, my opinion is that a pseudonym makes a person unique and instantly distinguishable from each other.

Then I wondered, where the hell does the pseudonym come from? Now, I’ve discussed my pseudonym, ‘Sunny Boy’, a few times and I’ve never really come up with a difinitive answer to that question. Some are more obvious than others but I’ve never been able to trace the routes of mine back. Heh. Well, the point of this post is to get you thinking about your pseudonyms, why you use them, where you use them and where it came from? Please comment.
