I didn't explore the security side of things, and with hindsight I think I should of. The fon router does provide encryption and anyone who uses it has to be a fon member and identify themselves with their username and password. Yeah, this isn't 100% secure, I agree.

I don't agree that the idea is flawed, but I think the actual idea as a practice is slightly flawed.

I think Fon as an idea is flawed. Don't expect to find many Fon hotspots in decent places - you won't be able to use Fon down the pub, at the airport, and you won't be able to sit in a nice cafe in Trafalgar Square and use free wi-fi. However, you could drive around and park outside somebodys house to get free wi-fi. The great thing is, if I got a fon hotspot and set it up, nobody would actually be able to pick it up because my house is so far away from the road. You'd probably have to park on my driveway. The fon maps are also pretty crappy so it's hard to find a hotspot.

Additionally with Fon, you'll probably have open unencrypted traffic causing security issues, use of Fon may be against the ISP's terms and conditions and if somebody does something illegal with your connection, you may be responsible.
